A United Nations High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety will be held on July 20-21.
It will be held in the General Assembly Hall and Trusteeship Council Chamber at UN Headquarters in New York from 15:00 to 18:00 Eastern Time [ET] on July 20 and from 10:00 to 18:00ET on July 21, 2026.
Convened by the President of the UN General Assembly and the World Health Organization, the theme is ‘Scaling up and accelerating implementation of commitments to halving road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030.’
Road collisions claim nearly 1.2 million lives each year, and are the leading cause of death among the world's children and young people aged 5-29.
The event will bring leaders, ministers, officials and experts together from governments, the UN, civil society, academia, the private sector and philanthropic foundations to advance progress in meeting the goal of halving road deaths and injuries by 2030 in the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030.
A Progress Declaration has been agreed by intergovernmental negotiation in advance of the meeting.

The event builds on the Political Declaration of the High-Level Meeting on Road Safety adopted by the UN General Assembly in June 2022, and the Fourth Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety held in Marrakech, Morocco in February 2025. A multistakeholder hearing as part of the preparatory process was held on May 12, 2026.
A note by the UN Secretary-General, titled ‘Improving global road safety’ was released in February 2026. The report notes that road traffic injuries remain a major global health and development challenge, and that road safety must be institutionalized as a long-term priority, with robust agencies, strategic planning and measurable targets in place across all countries, and supported by the private sector, civil society and youth movements regardless of income level.
From commitments to delivery: WHO side-event on country progress on road safety
WHO will host a side-event titled 'From commitments to delivery: country progress on halving road deaths and serious injuries by 2030' on July 20.
The side-event will bring leaders, ministers and experts together to provide an overview of global road safety progress, an exploration of national actions, and a discussion on turning commitments into impact.
The event will be live streamed on UN Web TV.
A series of other side events are also planned around the High-Level Meeting.
